One of the favorite places for looking up a used camper van or RV is on Craigslist. While there are things you have to watch out for when going this route, Craigslist can be very rewarding. There are thousands of transactions that happen every day through Craigslist, and many of them are vehicle transactions. Let’s dive into a few ways you can use Craigslist to find a great used camper van.

As with anything, make sure you have a good idea of what you are looking for and the price range you are ready to spend. Also know beforehand how far you are willing to travel to find a great used camper van or RV. The further out you are willing to go the wider net you cast in terms of variety. The downside to that is you may have to pay shipping or go pick it up. Not always a bad thing if you like a road trip!

Tips to automate searching for a used camper van or RV on Craigslist

Here we will describe a method for automating your Craigslist search and still being able to find the best deals on Craigslist first.

If you have a rough idea of the type of used camper van/rv you are looking for, head over to and click on your city. Do a search for something broad to start, like “Motorhome” or “RV”. I recommend not doing a category search because in many cases a seller may not be entirely savvy enough with Craigslist to properly setup an ad. You may limit what you see if you only look within categories which cuts your chances of getting the best deal. Instead, plug your price range in using the “min” and “max” fields. I would start off with a minimum of $2,000 so that you get rid of a lot of the junk listings. Also, check off the “has image” box.

Now, here is where you automate things. If you don’t have an account at, go get one. This is a web service that touts itself as a way to automate the web. Make sure you use your real email address because we are going to set it up to where sends you an email when a new Craigslist listing that matches your search parameters comes up. In this way, you will have a better shot than most at getting to a great deal on a used camper van or RV.

After you have your account setup, create a new “Recipe”. Click “This” then choose the “Feed” option. Then choose “New feed item”.

Go back to that Craigslist search you had open and look for an orange button at the bottom right hand side of the screen that says “RSS”.

Click on that. The page you now see might look weird, that’s ok. What you want is the URL of that page. Copy that web address and paste that into the “Feed URL” field. Then click “Create Trigger”.

No click “That” and then click on the email icon. Go ahead and click “Send me an email” and then click “Create Action”. And there you go, you will begin to get emails every time a new Craigslist ad goes up that includes your search criteria. Now you don’t have to relentlessly scour Craigslist to get that great deal, they will just be emailed to you. You can do this with other searches as you like. Once you have that deal you want, just log back in to and delete the “Recipe” of that search.
